Owen Rubin says When traveling anywhere outside your normal area, a possibility of GI issues are always a possibility. We were traveling recently with a group of 30 to Mexico, and 4 people in our group did get stomach problems during the week stay, and one more on the trip home, a few worse than others. Some blame the very rich foods served, others want to blame the water. Still others thought that the raw tuna sashimi were to blame, but I ate a lot of that and had no problems. No telling what might trigger an issue with unfamiliar foods and drink.
The water in hotels is typically filtered, as is their ice for drinks. Best to stick to bottled water for the most part, take it with you if you go outside the club, and avoid ice in drinks when outside the club as well. Be careful not to eat raw fruits or veggies that are prepared outside, as they too can cause problems.
Carry some Pepto with you just to be safe. Posted January 19, 2010, 5:01 pm

2Topher Punta Cana G.O. says Just like Owen said, there are always risks when traveling outside of the U.S. In the village we don't see many people actually getting sick. Club Med has gone through all the actions and preparations to prevent their clients from becoming sick. We have added hand sanitizers at both restaurants, bars, and entrances to mini-club. All of the water in the village is put through a filter, this is to prevent the g.m.'s from getting worried but as well as our g.o.'s. The biggest problem people find is stomach problems, and this is caused by the vegetables and fruits that are all natural, unlike the fruit and vegetables in the U.S.A. and Canada. But thtat is not to say don't eat the vegetables and fruit that is to say eat in moderation the first day if you have a worry. I personally have eaten the fruit and vegetables since day one and have had no problems. Hope you have a great stay when you visit. Posted January 24, 2010, 5:19 pm

0maria says I am a pharmacist and spoke to a nurse colleague from a travel clinic about all of this. She said most of the time people go away from the resort on excursions and eat/drink at unsafe places. Since that isn't always the case (as it was with one doctor I know of who visited the resort and did not go on excursions), always wash your hands and ask your pharmacist and doctor how you can prepare for Traveller's Diarrhea. For example, buy the little packets of oral rehydration powder that you reconstitute with water and put them in your travel kit. Probiotics taken regularly during your stay and shortly thereafter outcompetes infectious viruses. Also, don't forget about exposure on the airplane or airports. Carry a hand sanitizer that has 70% alchohol--this ensures viruses are killed whereas anything lower only kills bacteria. Hopefully we don't get sick there in Dec.
