I am traveling to Punta Cana for the first time in March 2010. My doctor, (and the US CDC), are advising that I should take preventative meds for malaria, typhoid and Hep A before traveling to the DR. Yet I have spoken with many people who have traveled to Punta Cana and none of them have ever taken preventative meds for these diseases. Are these precautions really necessary?

Punta Cana Mom says I would get Hep A (useful even @home) and typhoid, assuming you have enough time for shots to take effect & get all round(s) necessary. Talk to your MD about recommended malaria meds and any side effects so you can weigh pros/cons. Over past 3 years, we used bug repellant when there was no breeze or in areas where no breeze would penetrate (most often in evenings). They fumigate, too. This year also saw some moms w mosquito netting for babies in strollers. Posted February 9, 2010, 2:57 pm

1Topher Punta Cana G.O. says For the doctors these meds are neccesary so that they can afford their bmw's. No just like the mom above said, hep A is a good one even for home. But as for the others, no they are not necessary. I do recommed you bring your own bug spray though because it is expensive here just like the sunscreen. hope you dont have any worries when you decide to reserve for this beautiful club Posted February 17, 2010, 12:48 pm
