Why don't you ask for help when you get to whichever resort you will be visiting? I found the GO's happy to help. I bet you could find one who would happily build castles in the sand with you. I found a sand rendition of Rodin's "The Kiss" at this site, you may want to show this to the GO in case they aren't familiar with Rodin. : )http://www.sandsculpture.co.uk/

I know people who have gone to both resorts. My understanding is Punta Cana is a larger resort, so if you as a single parent are seeking adult company during your vacation, you may want to keep that in mind. Some people like larger resorts so they can mix and mingle with a certain degree of anonymity, while others prefer a smaller resort where there is more of a tighter community feeling. I grew up a daughter in a single parent family, I travelled a lot with my mother. : )

I'm a true convert to Club Med family resorts. Especially for intergenerational vacations such as the one you will be taking. Totally understand your concern regarding whether there will be enough to occupy everyone at ever age. I think you'll be just fine. And really, 14 year olds can claim to be bored anywhere, even if they aren't. It's kind of a way for them to get all the attention, the very attention teens claim they don't want, yet seem to seek out all the time. However, I can tell you when I was at the resort in Cancun, I did not hear one teen complaining about being bored. I don't have an answer to your Rio De Janeiro question, but I'll make sure someone gets over here who does.

I would bring both, flip flops and water shoes as they will probably wear both. Activities will differ slightly among the resorts. Kid programs are planned with the ages children carefully considered. Your 2 year old would be in Petit Club Med program.Activities like pajama parties, face painting, fun& games, singing songs, etc. Your 4 & 5 year olds' Mini Club Med offers games, trapeze, arts & crafts, tennis, soccer, sailing. there are also climbing structures (play areas) on site they can enjoy too.
