I Found My Smile!
I was grumpy. And exhausted. I had just finished my master’s degree while working full time, and was in desperate need of some relaxation. My well-traveled friend Frank told me there was only one destination to consider: Club Med Bora Bora. So I packed my bags and hopped a plane to French Polynesia.
The view from the air really looks, well, fake. The islands have white sandy beaches and water that is ten shades of turquoise. Bora Bora is surrounded by a motu; an uninhabited ring of land that creates a huge lagoon around the island. The result is calm seas teeming with life and crystal clear water. I couldn’t wait to land.
The bungalows stretch across a long beach and provide everyone with an unencumbered view of the water. But even better is that there’s a boat that runs throughout the day to take you over to the motu, where there’s another beach and great snorkeling. This results in all of the beach area being almost deserted. There is never a fight over the last beach chair or kids running by and kicking sand in your face. It’s truly the ultimate in relaxation.
I spent one afternoon visiting “downtown”. There are only a handful of shops. There is no hustle, no bustle, just peace and quiet. There are some great trips offered, including swimming with sharks and petting stingrays. But the best trip I had wasn’t in the catalog. While having a BBQ lunch on the motu, the sailing GO asked my new friends from the resort and me if we wanted to take a sunset cruise. Um, duh. So six of us jumped on two Hobie cats and took off around the island. We stopped at a good sunset viewing spot, headed near shore and tied together. Next thing I know a speedboat comes over; it’s another GO with cocktails. It was a moment I’ll never forget, watching the sun set over Bora Bora.
Bora Bora has all of the great things you expect from Club Med, with a location that’s really out of a postcard. For the ultimate beach getaway without crowds, you cannot beat Bora Bora!
