A GM Wingman Helps G.O Find True Love
My love life as a GO was hopeless until I made friends with a GM.
One day, I sat down to eat with a black GM who was alone at a table. After I sat down, his wife came back from getting her food and sat down with us. The first thing she noticed after she sat down was that the wine bottle at our table was over half empty. She asked her husband if he knew anything about it and he turned towards me and said, “Let’s ask Brian if he knows anything about it.” I told her that it had been me who drank half a bottle of wine while she was up getting a salad. From that point on, I was new best friends with her husband, Butch. During that week, whenever I went to the bar, Butch would buy me drinks. One night he asked me if there were any girls that worked in Club Med that I was attracted to. I told him that I was attracted to all of them. He then asked me to narrow my focus and tell him names. I was pretty shy about that kind of thing so I didn’t say anything but just at that moment the GO set-designer named Meg walked by and Butch noticed that my eye followed her a half second longer than the other girls walking by.
From that point on, it was Butch’s mission to hook me up with Meg. He would run into her around the village and announce there was a GO who had a crush on her and he was going to announce himself any day. Butch would find me later at the bar and tell me it was time to announce myself. I finally got the nerve to talk to Meg at the end of the week, as she was always smiling at me and really nice. She was my kind of girl. She wore no make-up, had a really clean complexion, always had power tools in her hands while at work and dressed in ripped pants.
I finally got a date with Meg. Gabriel came along on the date and Meg brought her friend Rubia from excursions. We all went to a disco called Krystine’s. It was a weeknight so we had the dance floor to ourselves. While dancing, the girls would stuff the balloons from the dance floor down their shirts and dance around with fake boobs. The night was really fun and when it came time to say good night to Rubia and Meg in reception, I knew I had to make my move on Meg but I chickened out.
Butch’s plan worked, he made me realize that no matter how awkward I felt, I had to try to approach the girls. He proved to me that they were there for the same reason I was, which was to meet people and have a good time.
A few weeks later, my dreams came true when I saw a Mexican girl walking through the village with four female GO’s. These five girls were creating quite a stir around the village. The other girls were pretty but the Mexican girl put them all to shame with her shoulder-long, curly, nut brown hair and deep brown tan. I asked other GO’s who she was. I was told that she was half Italian and half Mexican; that would explain her dark skin and green eyes. She was so exotic-looking that she made all the other girls look ordinary and boring. I hadn’t been in reception when she arrived so I wasn’t totally sure whether she was a guest or a GO. I was usually the first person to meet and greet everyone who came to the hotel but somehow this gal had slipped through the cracks. I seemed to be walking by her four or five times a day the first week she was in the village but still hadn’t talked to her. I could never get the courage to walk up to her and start a conversation. I figured she wouldn’t be interested in me anyway, and, if I did try to talk to her, I didn’t know if she would bother talking to an American.
My whole outlook changed one night when I walked by her at the bar and I could tell she was watching me. When I returned her look she quickly started looking at the floor. I felt this strange sensation come over me, as if I was Superman because of the way she looked at me. I then turned around and walked up to her, but had no idea what to say. I walked over and asked her what her name was. She looked up and was very surprised that I could speak Spanish, but still didn’t respond. She just kept smiling at me for about five seconds. Finally she said her name was Faridy and it turned out she was from Queretaro, the city in Mexico where I had studied a few years earlier. As we started talking, I began to notice a lot of coincidences. It was too bizarre to have so much in common with a girl who I had only just met.
As I continued to talk about my experiences in Mexico, I was waiting for her to interrupt and start talking about something else. Whenever I stopped talking she would ask me more questions about myself, she seemed to be hanging off every word I said. She also spoke Spanish very clearly and was so easy-going that I quickly lost my nervousness. The part of her personality that was the most alluring was the fact that she didn’t get a pained expression in her face when she heard me speak Spanish; she could follow along perfectly with what I was saying even though I didn’t know what I was talking about half the time.
After chatting with her for what seemed like no time at all but had really been hours, I began worrying that she would think I was trying to get her to come to my room, so I said I really enjoyed talking with her, and said I’d see her the next day.
During the next couple of weeks we began spending more and more time together. She was always working in different parts of the village. One day she’d be in the theatre and the next she’d be on the beach. We could always hang out while she was in between activities. At night she would invite me to go out with her and her other girlfriends. I felt like a stud getting into the taxi with so many girls. In the mornings they would all come and visit me in reception, we’d chat and they’d laugh at all my lame jokes about how badly I danced or why I couldn’t get a tan.
