Mexican Hots
I'm not embarrassed to say that I travel to eat. And when I'm traveling with friends, often they'll be astonished that I spend most of the mornings scoping on a suitable place for lunch, then instead of visiting a museum or another notable destination in the afternoon, my search will invariably be toward finding just the right place for dinner.
So imagine how much fun it was for me to spend a week in Ixtapa with over two dozen other food bloggers, where no one looked at me funny if I heaped my plate up with huevos rancheros in the morning, wolfed down a couple of tacos stuffed with carnitas (caramelized pork) at lunch, and ended the day with chalupas...and a margarita on-the-rocks (or two), to accompany the spectacular sundown.
It didn't take me long to follow the line of GOs to the two women that lorded over the hot griddle in the dining room, patting out handmade corn tortillas and preparing a variety of salsas, from cool, green chile verde with tomatillos to one that looked like red chile jam, and matched the temperature of the scorching Mexican sun.
With all of my senses burning, what's a guy to do? Take advantage of the ice cream bar. Yes, a cool scoop of helado Magnum (ice cream based on the popular popsicle treat) with a healthy (er...) dousing of dulce de leche. Luckily during my whole week with food bloggers, not once did I get any funny looks for spending so much time deciding what to eat. In fact, considering the company, I had some stiff competition!
