Discovering the Maghreb

Great spices in the souks-- am using them with my new tagine

I am a fairly adventurous traveler. I always wanted to go to Morocco and Tunisia but never found anyone to travel with me. A little nervous to travel as a women alone, I decided to go by myself but play it a little bit safe. I booked a room at Club Med Le Riad (in a suite with a roof top terrace) and from the beginning easily found my comfort zone. The staff at the hotel, and especially of the Riad were very helpful and trustworthy. They gave me great information--like telling me I don't need a guide for the souks and recommending wonderful restaurants in the heart of Marrakech. This gave me the confidence to discover the city on my own. I really recommend hanging out in the main plaza (a UNESCO heritage site) and having a tangerine juice. The souks are fun--just prepare yourself for some hardcore sales pitches. I would now return to Morocco again alone--and hope to do so sometime soon to visit the Atlas mountains and observe the Berber culture (a minority in the country).
