Club Med G.O., Robel Teklemariam, Qualifies for 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

by Katie Riguzzi on February 3, 2010

Club Med’s very own G.O., Robel Teklemariam has qualified for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games for the second time. Robel shares details on his journey to the Olympics and his reactions after his qualifying race. Please join us in congratulating Robel and be sure to keep an eye out for him in the upcoming weeks. Congrats, Robel!

I have finally made it! My journey to qualify has been much longer and tiring than I expected. After my final qualifying race I realized that I had been running on so much adrenaline; that my body was exhausted from all the traveling (in total 7 countries) and racing. When I finished the race and knew that I had qualified for the Olympics, I was so excited that my energy got me through the rest of the afternoon’s skiing. As soon as I got back to my hotel room, everything hit me at once; I could not keep my eyes open. In fact, I fell asleep at 5pm and did not wake up until 1 pm the next day – and I am telling you I slept like a rock.

Anyhow, I have qualified for the Olympics and will be on my way to Canada this week. In the meantime I am in Ethiopia and have been roller skiing to stay in shape and to maintain my technique.

I really have a lot of thanking to do. If it were not for sponsors like Club Med, North Country School, The Nile Restaurant in Richmond VA, my family and all the private donations received through out the qualifying process, this all would not have been possible.

On the Club Med side of my journey, another former Club Med G.O. has been a huge help in getting me to the races and raising funds – Shehime Arshad. I am sure you all know her from one village or another but one thing many of you may not know is that Shehime is an official board member of the Ethiopian Ski Association and has been for the past four years. I know it is a trip but, hey, that is the life of a G.O. or former G.O. — no matter what, the bonds we created as we were G.O.s will never be broken.

Wish me luck on my journey to Canada and I will send more updates out as I get closer to the games.
