Tips for traveling with dive gear
Dive journalist Jeff Toorish gives his best tips for traveling with dive gear to avoid delays and lost equipment. Follow these tips and you will never miss the first dive of the day again.
Place a note inside your dive equipment case explaining what the gear is. It helps T.S.A. identify things and speeds the process. On the note, explain this is life support equipment for scuba diving. Make sure your cell phone number is on the note so they can call you if they have questions
Carry on any custom scuba equipment such as presciption masks or regulators with custom mouth pieces rather than checking them, that way if your bags are delayed you can still dive and be comfortable.
Most recreational scuba diving resorts use yoke valves on their tanks. If you use D.I.N. regulators, be sure to bring adaptors so your regulators will fit the tanks.
When you are returning from the dive trip, your gear is likely to wiegh up to 10 percent more because it may still be damp. Keep that in mind in view of new airline weight retrictions. If you were just under the weight limit on the way to the resort you are likely to be overweight on the way home.
Packing for the trip home is always a little more difficult. Try to leave a little extra room in your bag to make it easier to pack for the trip home.
Above all, if you encounter any problems as a traveler, being calm and patient always works best.
